Gameplayĭon’t Starve Together follows the gameplay loop of scavenging, sleep, repeat as the nightmarish world threatens to keep players on edge throughout the experience. However you choose to spend your time in the wilderness, you can be sure that your efforts will go rewarded and your sanity will deplete. The atmosphere is just as tense as in the original, with monsters lurking in broad daylight along with a steadily ticking timer for nightfall. Other outstanding sound design instances include the caves’ ambiance as you can hear drips, creaks, and howls within the darkness. The sound design takes center stage as your survival depends on audio cues to detect coming danger.Ĭertain days in the game have characters mentioning that they hear something ominous in the distance, which signals that wild animals will attack your base. Characters’ voices are represented by different instruments, which add a bit of personality to each of them. The monster designs instill the right amount of fear and dread while still adhering to this twisted world’s canon.ĭon’t Starve Together’s graphics manage to balance the more serene side of hiking through the woods while also being able to make the player feel as small as an ant when a deer-clops inevitably ruins your camp. The graphics are comparable to that of a children’s pop-up book.Īnimations for the game are excellent and ooze their sense of charm. Fans of Tim Burton will love the character designs along with how unsettling the world can feel at times. The lovely hand-drawn inspired graphics from Don’t Starve look just as impressive in the sequel. While some of the plot’s key components happen off-screen, we appreciate how the developers managed to continue the narrative and make it work for a cooperative setting by having former foes work together. Characters have new quips that help flesh out their personalities and the world itself. With a new antagonist and a desire to make things right, Wilson and Maxwell manage to build a portal back to the wilderness and bring along some allies to take down the new ruler.ĭon’t Starve Together keeps the lore going strong by adding supplementary material both inside and outside the game through cinematic trailers and developer timelines. With malicious intent in her eyes, she rips Wilson from the nightmare throne and drains him of his energy before throwing him through a portal and claiming the throne for herself. After an indiscernible amount of time, Wilson is eventually greeted by Maxwell’s former assistant Charlie, who is the physical manifestation of the darkness within Maxwell’s world. Wilson is then chained to the nightmare throne and forced to take Maxwell’s place.

After talking to him and getting a grasp on the situation, the player has the option to free Maxwell from his prison, only to see his body seemingly melt away into bones. While Wilson and his compatriots must deal with Maxwell’s twisted world alone, braving the darkness becomes much more bearable and hilarious with friends by your side.Īfter the original Don’t Starve events, Wilson manages to make it to Maxwell, only to find the man bound by a demonic chair. The original Don’t Starve game was an excellent way to experience the dangers and thrills of being put into a hostile environment.
Thankfully, the Klei Entertainment folks realized this and have created an excellent sequel known as Don’t Starve Together.
It can be cold, lonely, and a toll on one’s mental health. It’s not easy being thrown into the wilderness.
